Godiasco gennaio 1984

After many years, Novaresio returned to hold a solo exhibition of watercolours. These works portrayed the landscapes of the Staffora Valley around Godiasco, a small town of the Oltrepò Pavese, where he had moved in 1971. His love for this place was evident: the aim of the exhibition was to raise funds for the creation of a new public park. The event collected over one million liras.

For a long time, the Genoese ships exported works of art (especially sculptures which were sent to South America). Nowadays, cruise ships still host small exhibitions. Novaresio held an exhibition on the motorship Irpinia, which was travelling in the eastern Mediterranean: his paintings showed the artist’s formal research.

Novaresio did not personally take part in this exhibition, but promoted it actively and passionately. The real protagonists of this event were Aden Mohamed, Fatuma Giana and Isuf, three young Somali artists. The exhibition also included a series of small sculptures from the Museum of the Istituto Italiano per l’Africa.

When Novaresio came back to Italy, he proposed an exhibition focused on his African journey. Among the works displayed were figures of women and shepherds, the main subjects of Novaresio’s African paintings. Once again, the research of new formal solutions took the artist away from simple illustrative and folkloristic images.

This is probably one of Novaresio’s most original exhibitions. The works displayed here focus on the construction of the Kariba dam: the artist portrayed the creation of the reservoir through drawings of views and workers.  This exhibition (which also included the works of the explorer Thomas Baines) was honoured by a visit from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.

Another example of Novaresio’s international activity. The local press was very interested in this exhibition, pointing out the versatility of his drawing technique: this stylistic choice was considered particularly suitable to portray the African people and landscape, which the artist captured with immediacy, creating what he called “notes on a journey”.

Illustrazione catalogo mostra

This is Novaresio’s first solo exhibition outside Italy. The artist described it as a tribute to Somalia: he did not yet know that this would be the first of a long series of exhibitions on his land of adoption. Landscapes and, above all, figures of warriors and young Somali women were the main features of the artist’s production, even in the years of maturity.
